Answers to your questions.

We often get asked questions such as how to donate or refer, below you will find answers to some of the more frequently asked questions.

We offer psychotherapy based counselling for a range of mental health and emotional concerns. We offer 1-2-1 and group therapy sessions and will work with you to determine what support will suit you.

Our focus is you, you’ll be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions in a judgment-free space. We help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes and how to move forward to overcome these.

Once you have been referred into our services you will be contacted within a week to acknowledge your request. Depending on whether you would like to access 1-2-1 or group sessions, our wait times will vary. Our mission is to offer affordable counselling, therefore most of our team work on a voluntary basis to support this. We ask for a donation of £20 per session. If cost is a barrier for accessing our services we can discuss this at our first session.

Register on our self-referral form here, or by contacting our offices on 01271 267474. This call will be answered by our Counselling Support Officer who will take some basic contact details from you.

Once you have been added to our waiting list, we will contact you to arrange an assessment.

An assessment is a brief meeting, generally by phone, where you have an opportunity to talk to us about what you’d like to explore in counselling, and what you’d like to work on.

Following your assessment we will work as quickly as we can, to match you with one of the counsellors from our team.

Your first session is a chance to get to know your counsellor and for them to get to know you too. They will talk to you about what you’d like to explore in counselling and what you might to like to change and will begin working on a plan with you for the coming weeks.

We offer weekly sessions for 15 weeks for both our 1-2-1 and group work. Each session lasts one hour.

Our sessions are run from our offices in central Barnstaple, we are within walking distance of a car park and the bus station. For those who may find the 1st floor location difficult due to mobility issues, we can offer online sessions where appropriate.

Clarity operates Monday-Thursday 9-5, currently we cannot offer weekend appointments.

We understand that emergencies happen, if you are unable to attend please let us know as soon as possible by calling 01271 267474 or emailing We want to support as many people as possible, so your consideration in attending your appointments each week is greatly appreciated.

You can request to be added to the waitlist for the next available groups via our referral form here. We will review your circumstances and help you decide if group work will be the best solution for your individual needs.

You can request to be added to the waitlist for the 1-2-1 therapy via our referral form here. We will review your circumstances and if 1-2-1 support will be the best solution for your individual needs.

We are dedicated to supporting our local community, however there is no postcode requirement for accessing our services.

We simply ask that you make us aware of any concerns you have such as mobility, speech and language, neurodiversity etc when you self-refer to us, we can then ensure that any necessary arrangements are made.
